Laurent La Gamba (b. 1967) is an artist, photographer, and video artist interested in pro-crypsis (camouflage) La Gamba’s projects span a variety of in situ installations, performances and photographic installations to look at Procrypsis in relationship to the world of urban space and technology. His work aims at creating a kind of urban camouflage (“homochromie”in French) that mimics what is naturally found in nature with Procrypsis, using painting, photography and video as a tool. This background explains the term for his work: Pro-cryptic Photography.

La Gamba's work is based on this utilization of the urban space as a reflection on the self and explores through identification processes the chromatic response of the human body to the urban environment. He is known for his public supermarket camouflage photographs (Pet food, 2002) and for his peculiar use of consumer appliance objects extracted from their original environment and camouflaged into a natural setting (Open fridge, 2002). He carried out several works-in-progress based on audiovisual performances conducted under the action of camera circling (Full open fridges, 2003).

Previously, La Gamba studied literature at the Sorbonne/Paris, specializing in the clinical aspects of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s work. He began his work with photo-realistic self-portraits (One hundred Self-portraits, 1999). He received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and since 2002 holds an artist-in-residence position at the La Napoule Art Foundation.

Celebrating color, customization and personal expression, adidas presents adicolor Podcasts, an inspired collection of short films conceived specifically for iPod, PSP or online viewing from seven of the most exciting and culturally relevant directors working today.

Roman Coppola & Andy Bruntel, Neill Blomkamp, PSYOP, TRONIC, Saiman Chow, Charlie White, and HAPPY were each assigned one of seven colors – Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Pink, Black or White. A simple, open-ended brief asked each director to create a viral film based on their emotional and creative response to that color. The resulting shorts are a color-coded collection of innovative film aesthetics and contemporary creative sensibilities, a truly post-modern mix of genre, style and technique.

adicolor Podcasts will be released individually over a two month period, available for free download from sites such as iTunes and Google Video. In addition, Paris-based adicolor Consortium partner, Colette, will offer on-sight free downloads of the Podcasts.

One of the true British graphic originators of our time, his work has been hugely influential in music and youth culture since he started out in the late 1980’s. Fresh from art school he landed a job at The Face magazine under the watchful eye of Neville Brody. Over the past fifteen years he’s worked for Arena, been the art director of Straight No Chaser magazine and founded the company ‘Swifty Typographix.’ Between 1990 – 1995 his output reached a whole new level producing a diverse volume of distinctive record sleeves for Mo Wax, Talkin Loud and Source 360 including the labels iconic brand logos.

By 1997 he’d set up ‘Typomatic’ the UK’s first independent font factory, and with an arsenal of killer fonts to his name Swifty was firmly established as a major source of inspiration for young graphic designers everywhere. With continued presence in the music industry through work for Far Out Recordings and Melt 2000 Swifty’s signature style made the leap to TV, with clients ranging from MTV, Channel 4, BBC2 and Channel 5.

Swifty continues to work across these genres today, still art directing the highly acclaimed Straight No Chaser magazine as well as over the last two years lending his skills to them lot over at Addict.

Hardy Blechman is the man behind the Marharishi fashion label, which spearheaded 1990s combat chic. He customised his Zoomer with DPM – Disruptive Pattern Material

“My Zoomer has been very useful for my daily journeys between head office in Hackney and the store in Covent Garden. The leather I’ve added is luxurious, but also hard-wearing. I’ve attached BMX-style pads to the handlebars and the back to act as handles for when I need to lift it up steps. And the camouflage waterproof cover comes in useful when I leave it outside. The wider handlebars were inspired very much by those on Steve McQueen’s motorbike in The Great Escape.”

“The beauty of customisation is that it can go in any direction – there are as many perceptions of great style in the world as there are souls. And the boundary between customisation and design is increasingly blurring. A current example of this, and one of my favourites, is the world’s best toy designer Michel Lau’s Mr Shoe – 100 customisations of a Nike shoe.”

“I also own a monkey bike and I think the Zoomer follows in that tradition of cleverly designed and well built scooters by Honda. It’s more honest chunky and durable, and has more charisma than most scooters currently available. It allows people to express themselves by imprinting their own personality. It represents the ‘democratisation of design’, in that it puts design decisions in the hands of the consumer.”

“People in the street are interested in this camouflage customisation and I’ve told them about the Maharishi connection. My aim is to present an alternative perspective on camouflage by using it outside of its military context. This ‘Bonsai Forrest’ pattern represents camouflage’s natural and artistic heritage – the clouds and trees refer to how shapes and colours of camouflage patterns mimic the natural world. It is sometimes forgotten that artists from many disciplines played important roles in the development of military camouflage.”

These special camouflage colourway headphones have become semi-legendary, previously only available in Japan or in very small run import batches (they still come in Japanese boxes). Aside from their unique look, the ATH-PRO5 MS is comparable to the domestic ATH-M30s, featuring 40mm drivers, sturdy construction, and comfortable padding.
Sound quality is above average for this price range, with strong bass and clearly defined mids. The cord features a convenient single-sided ear piece attachment, and comes with a protective metal sheath around the plug for extended life. The included 1/4" adaptor screws onto the standard 1/8" plug with a smooth metal connection. Suitable for active dj or casual use.

Fire up your popup blockers and check out these eeerie images of airplane graveyards over here...

Outside Tuscon, Arizona in the Sonora Desert is AMARC, the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center. Here the U.S. Air Force mothballs planes until they either need them again or it's time to salvage them for parts. Whenever the U.S. sells surplus planes to foreign governments part of the sales pitch is that there will always have a ready supply of spare parts. Some are turned into pilotless drones and used for missile target practice.

There are about 4,000 planes in storage, most now from the Vietnam era. Apparently in the 60's there were still planes from World War II there.

    DPM Disruptive Pattern Material

Maharishi’s Creative Director, Hardy Blechman has been extremely influential in the proliferation of camouflage and combat trousers (or Snopants®) in civilian fashion over the past decade. Now, after six years of intensive research, he reveals the depth of his exploration into the vast world of camouflage in his magnum opus: DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material). DPM is an encyclopaedic art book that charts the history of camouflage from its roots in nature, through to its adoption by the military, and on to its current popularity and use within modern civilian culture. Divided into two books totalling 944 pages, no other title offers such comprehensive coverage of this multi-faceted and highly engaging subject.

DPM contains more than 5,000 images, many of which are previously unpublished, by some of the world's leading nature, military and fashion photographers. Included are depictions of camo-clad cultural icons such as David Beckham, Robert De Niro, U2, Notorious BIG, Ali G, Neneh Cherry, and Joe Strummer.

The book includes a comprehensive, historical guide to the camouflage patterns issued to soldiers of 107 nations around the world. DPM also, for the first time in print, thoroughly documents the rise of camouflage outside of the armed forces - used by anti-war protesters in the 1960s, further explored by modern artists, and reinvented within areas such as fashion, architecture, music, film, and sport among numerous other fields. Throughout the book, including the 'Military' section, a strong anti-war sentiment is expressed with the emphasis on camouflage's natural and artistic beauty.

Drawing on the expertise of an extensive team of consultants, DPM is the most authoritative camouflage manual ever published and an indispensable modern reference guide for both the novice and seasoned camoufleur.

Available from the Maharishi Store, 19a Floral Street, Covent Garden, London, WC2E 9HL
