From movie stars, musicians, and skate-boarders to toys, technology, and history, Giant Robot magazine covers cool aspects of Asian and Asian-American pop culture. Paving the way for less knowledgeable media outlets, Giant Robot put the spotlight on Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li years before they were in mainstream America's vocabulary.

Giant Robot

But Giant Robot is much more than idol worship. GR's spirited reviews of canned coffee drinks, instant ramen packs, Japanese candies, Asian frozen desserts, and mar-inated bugs have spawned numerous copycat articles in other publications. GR's historical pieces on the Yellow Power Movement, footbinding, Asian-American gangsters, and other savory topics have been cited by both academics and journalists. Other regular features include travel journals, art and design studies, and sex.

"Hitachi TRK-8200HR + Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 Color Tablet PC
currently running win98 (linux or dual-boot when complete) with MediaCar as the default mp3 interface with custom skin for the 480x640 portrait display
20g harddrive
pcmcia LAN, and WiFi
internal webcam
4 USB
custom desktop to keep original aesthetics

The powersupply for the tablet is internal, and wired into the outlet on the boombox, so you only have to plug in the standard AC wire for both units to get power. the tablet also has a battery for complete portablity.

Functional as both PC and boombox. radio works, but the indicator had to be removed. the built-in mics will feed into the tablet, along with line-in and possibly radio so i can record radio to the harddrive, if i ever wanted to. the line-out of the tablet goes to the line-in of the boombox. the headphone jack on the boombox is unchanged, and the amplified external speaker jacks on the boombox had to be removed to make room for the power switch, standby and restart switches.

**recently installed: 802.11b adapter, oversized cpu heatsink and 50mm case cooling fan."

Geek geek geek! Whatever he's turned a boombox into a PC. Is this right? ruining a perfectly good Boombox??

WillItBlend.com, the official home of the "Will It Blend?" video series.

According to Will It Blends Tom Dickson extreme blending depends on the capabilities of the machine being used. Tasks that may be extreme for some machines are, quite frankly, simple tasks for Blendtec blenders...

Tom is ready for a new iPod, so naturally his old one needs to be blended! Don't try this at home.

"'Here is evidence it [the pattern] was being used, if not understood, 500 years ahead of when we had any idea what was going on with [it] in the West,' says physics graduate student Peter J. Lu of Harvard University. Lu began poring over photos from Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Afghanistan after seeing hints of the pattern while traveling in Uzbekistan. The Islamic artisans seem to have spun a wide variety of symmetric traceries from a set of five shapes, according to a report Lu co-authored, published online February 22 in Science." Scientific American

The designs are very close to Penrose tiles,  discovered by Rodger Penrose in the 1970's.

Just seen this on engadget.com

"No, we don't expect the vast majority of elderly folks kickin' it in a retirement home to honestly show any interest in video games (right?), but apparently, the Wii's at least making some minor strides in getting the geriatric set up and active with virtual sports. While we assume those suffering from lingering hip injuries are apt to join the (admittedly quiet) cheerleading section, a group of athletic 70-somethings from Sedgebrook retirement community are "hooked on Wii Sports," with bowling being the unanimous favorite. The response has been so positive that the locale is actually cranking up a 20-person tournament for an undisclosed reward, and while the residents have often commented about how "realistic" the Wiimote was in tossing the ball, the community actually has a fan for folks to dry their hands off before rolling a strike -- which is probably a smart move considering the potentially fatal injuries that could occur from slippage."

Earlier today the Engineer Online published an article on Engineered Fibre Structures innovative new knitted control interface.

"The glove is produced from standard acrylic or stretch-nylon base yarn and it can be made on a conventional industrial knitting machine. The wearable device looks and feels like a normal glove, except it has conductive pathways knitted into the material. The fingers are tipped with contactors, so if a user puts his or her thumb together with any other finger, they will create an electric circuit. The glove is completely wireless and its power pack and Bluetooth device is mounted at the cuff." Link

The Engineered Fibre Structures team hope to see applications in medicine, game controllers, general computer interface and "... a communications device, for industrial, security and military applications" Link

Virtual keyboard played with lasers

Digital Information Development (DID) have developed a virtual piano that is played with a keyboard consisting of projected laser beams.

The virtual keyboard projects a 25-key 2-octave keyboard onto the surface in front of it.

A CMOS camera and infrared semiconductor laser module detect which keys are touched and the corresponding notes are emitted from speakers built into the device.

The U-Boat Worx C-QuesterThe world's first consumer submarine, the C-Quester, which allows novice sailors to explore the ocean's depths, has gone on sale for the same price as a sportscar.

The miniature submarines can dive to 50 metres and cruise underwater for two and a half hours. At £65,000, the single-seat C-Quester is set to become the next must-have for wealthy adventurers.

However, customers must complete a four-day training course and have an underwater pilot's licence before they can use the gadget under the surface.

"Telecom Italia and Polymer Vision have reached an agreement to manufacture a rollable display device for the mobile market in 2007.

The device is based on the Readius concept designed by Polymer Vision, they will show the 'Cellular-Book' at 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona on February 12th. Its main purpose is to read newspapers, books and personal data.

Cellular-Book is smaller then a standard mobile phone, it sports a 5-inch screen that rolls out and displays 16 grey-levels on a high contrast, reflective light paper display by Polymer Vision." Link

The Readius is about the size of a mobile phone and it looks like it is a useful size.  One drawback is that there's no backlight  but on the plus side it has a simcard slot and is compatible with GSM/GPRS/EDGE or UMTS 3G link, so it will be able to connect to a number of mobile services. As flexible screen technology matures we're going to see a lot of these devices. Staring at cereal boxes in the morning will never be the same.

What happens when a proportion of the people using a new technology see it to be so enticing that they are willing to sacrifice every other aspect of their lives in order to engage with it?
In most instances, people can comfortably moderate their use of computers and the Internet. Occasionally however, some individuals feel compelled to indulge to an excessive degree, disrupting their lives and fracturing relationships. This uncontrolled behaviour displays many characteristics of addiction.
This project centers on the role design can play in guiding these individuals through their turbulent affair with the technology.

The Computer Hood is in 'Design Week' magazine this week as part of the promotion of the RCA Summer Show.

via VintagePixel for more infor goto http://www.joemalia.com/

"Technological addictions are operationally defined as non-chemical, behavioural addictions that involve human-machine interaction. They can be either passive (e.g. television) or active (e.g. the computer) and usually contain inducing and reinforcing features, which may contribute to the promotion of addictive tendencies.

The opportunity for dysfunctional engagement with computers and the Internet is being compounded by their standardisation in society. Flat rate broadband fees and online social software combine to provide a platform ideal for inclined individuals to develop an expansive social network across the digital landscape. In moderation this is fine, but it becomes problematic when usage is sustained over extended periods; especially when at the expense of existing 'real world' relationships and responsibility. The situation can deteriorate even further as the individual begins to display the salient features of addiction, i.e., mood modification, withdrawal, conflict and relapse.

Addressing this issue is rarely approached through design; generally, cognitive behavioural therapists prescribe treatment through rigorous counseling. Often this treatment is helped by medication. A very drastic measure and one that can only be taken by the affected individuals once they have accepted that this is a worthy problem. Designers have previously given very little consideration to the thoughts and actions of these individuals before or after a decision to seek help has been made.

Upon identifying a space for design in this dysfunctional sociotechnological landscape, I wrote three briefs based upon the differing experiences of real people affected, directly and indirectly, by this behaviour. The 'Design for the Computer Obsessive' project does not set out to solve all the issues it raises; instead it has been developed to highlight the impact of extreme engagement with a new technology. I want the projects to almost follow a narrative from one part to the next. A series of products that could easily coexist but also enjoy success independently."

An electro-graf is a graffiti piece or throw-up that uses conductive and magnetic paint to embed LED display electronics. The video below documents the making of the first prototype electro-graf in the lab at Eyebeam - giving you full instructions for using conductive and magnetic paint to embed electronics in stencil pieces.

Jean-Claude Van Damme was at the annual Indian film awards, hosted in Dubai, last week. He wore a bright pink suit and a funny-looking waistcoat. The best thing was that years of gak abuse and martial arts have left him with a wonderful nervous tick. He keeps doing little kung-fu kicks, apparently totally unaware that he's doing it. It was especially funny when he did it on stage, while presenting an award to screen legend Amitabh Bachnan.
