A rare print taken by US photography pioneer Edward Steichen has set a world record for the highest price paid for a photograph auction.

The Pond-Moonlight - taken in New York in 1904 - was sold for $2.9m (£1.6m), more than doubling the previous record.

The 41x48cm photo shows a pond in a wooded area with light coming through the trees and reflected in the water and it's shit! (joke)

Opening words from interview on Being Hunted
"Wilfrid Wood had eMailed me in May 2005 with a brief biography and, most importantly, a few images of his work. I followed the link to his site where I spent a whole evening going back and forth between the pictures of his characters.

The fascination is difficult to describe. It is mostly the figures' personalities carefully 'built' into all of his characters that capture one's attention. Despite their basic forms and shapes, all figures show distinct details and expressions - sympathetic and humorous in a way that one would like to get to know them a bit better.

Wilfrid mixes humor, irony, exaggeration, as well as sexual connotations in his work. The figures appear to be closer to 'real life' as compared to the usual clinically-cool, slick and neutral toys which have been flooding us for years. They are closer to life, more grown-up, they carry more meaning and have more character.

I invited Wilfrid over to Berlin to be part of "untitled", an exhibition of street culture within the Bread and Butter trade show. While this 'culture' has been losing most of its initial energy and impact (due to the endless repetitions of the same concepts - whether it'd be in design, music, clothing, or toys for that matter), it is artists such as Wilfrid Wood - thankfully still an outsider to this world - who show us that there is potential for progress and creativity... if you take a step aside and/or forward."

Find out more about Wilfrid Wood's work and meet his figures in a brilliant interview over at Being Hunted

The london police started when big english geezers headed to amsterdam in 1998 and started rejuvenating the visually disappointing streets of the drug capital of the world.

The characters known simply as "LADS" soon held an iconic presence in the city.
Electricity boxes became their home and between 1998 and 2003 over 1000 lads were drawn in the city.

From 2002 onward TLP started sending missionaries into other cities round the world and soon there were LADS on the streets and in shows in LONDON, MANCHESTER, BRUSSELS, BARCELONA, BERLIN, MUNICH, MILANO, TORINO, COPENHAGEN, NEW YORK, L.A, TOKYO and beyond. London Policeman have come and gone but founding members are still known to walk the streets of every city in the world spreading love through pens and stickers. Never be scared. Dont be a hero.

Hardy Blechman is the man behind the Marharishi fashion label, which spearheaded 1990s combat chic. He customised his Zoomer with DPM – Disruptive Pattern Material

“My Zoomer has been very useful for my daily journeys between head office in Hackney and the store in Covent Garden. The leather I’ve added is luxurious, but also hard-wearing. I’ve attached BMX-style pads to the handlebars and the back to act as handles for when I need to lift it up steps. And the camouflage waterproof cover comes in useful when I leave it outside. The wider handlebars were inspired very much by those on Steve McQueen’s motorbike in The Great Escape.”

“The beauty of customisation is that it can go in any direction – there are as many perceptions of great style in the world as there are souls. And the boundary between customisation and design is increasingly blurring. A current example of this, and one of my favourites, is the world’s best toy designer Michel Lau’s Mr Shoe – 100 customisations of a Nike shoe.”

“I also own a monkey bike and I think the Zoomer follows in that tradition of cleverly designed and well built scooters by Honda. It’s more honest chunky and durable, and has more charisma than most scooters currently available. It allows people to express themselves by imprinting their own personality. It represents the ‘democratisation of design’, in that it puts design decisions in the hands of the consumer.”

“People in the street are interested in this camouflage customisation and I’ve told them about the Maharishi connection. My aim is to present an alternative perspective on camouflage by using it outside of its military context. This ‘Bonsai Forrest’ pattern represents camouflage’s natural and artistic heritage – the clouds and trees refer to how shapes and colours of camouflage patterns mimic the natural world. It is sometimes forgotten that artists from many disciplines played important roles in the development of military camouflage.”

Stenkat was attracted to street art and graffiti at the tender age of 13. After graduating college, though, he realised he wasn't very cut out for working direct on the streets, and became a digital artist instead. His work still bears the hallmarks of his early dabblings.
Stenkat cites Ashley Wood, Iso50, 123kLan and Overage4design as influences, but also draws on nature, urban settings and cats in creating his work. Stenkat loves to create stark contrasts in his work: "I love to spend a lot of time to work on textures and scratched things, and then I put in some cute and sweet details."
Stenkat is cynical of the current street art scene, finding some artists too "hype" or self-aggrandising, and suggests people "be simple, be sincere and be friendly".

This little soundbox has quickly achieved cult classic status in the electronic music community. They moved a couple thousand over the holidays (Brian Eno bought 8!).

The creators, FM3, are the duo of Christiaan Virant and Chinese keyboardist and computer musician Zhang Jian, both based in Beijing.

Their simple box plays 8 ambient loops (buddhist type tones to melodic guitar) and fits in the size of your palm. It includes a built-in speaker, a headphone output, volume control, and a switch that rotates the loops.

Plug in your headphones and veg out, or put it by your desk for stress relief. You know pretty soon that people are going start integrating the colorful, lo-fi sound into productions too. Available in 6 different colors (shipped randomly). Comes in a kitschy Chinese packaging too

Only $25 go buy it here

More info on the Fm3 Buddha Machine

You can hear some short samples over at the FM3 site here

Also there's and in depth interview with FM3's Christiaan Virant titled The Ghost in the Buddha Machine over at Rare Frequency

Mine is already in the post...

Illustrator, painter, photographer, and word slacker Linda Zacks connects the dots between all the important nouns and verbs. Whether it's bringing the noise in decayed urban alleys or celebrating the spot where the surf pounds the sand, this Willy Wonka afficionado and Brooklyn dumpster-diver throws a lasso around the truth and pulls it in hard New York's coarse side has been lauded by all sorts of artists The most shallow ones romanticize the filth. But those who accept the vulgarity and tension for what it is usually reveal a bit of its heart too. Tension. Calamity. The urban obstinance that turns a jackhammer into a musical instrument. read on

“You´ll all die in your cars” is inspired by the Ben Folds song called “Zak and Sara”. I like Ben Folds, and so should you. “It´s not small” is the result of a juvenile discussion, my girlfriend and i had, about penis-size vs. overweight. (The michelin guy - also called Bibendum - on the painting is actually right according to medical science)

Simple Inexpensive Self Promotion

"I wanna share with you the beautiful thing that is the ONE SHOT. Basically the ONE SHOT is a mini-comic/zine/book type thing that's made using a single sheet of 8 1/2 X11 paper. meaning, of course, they're cheap to reproduce at any copy joint, as well as super easy to five-finger on the sly at work, if you're into that kinda thing. what makes me happy about this project, is it's really easy to share your work with others or, if you're selling them, they can actually pay for themselves with a minimal selling price. "

Materials
-8 1/2 x 11inch sheets of paper
-pencil and/or pen
-photocopier
-exacto knife
-a piece of board that you can cut on

If you haven’t seen Google Earth yet you gotta Google has been busy at it and mapped / photographed the entire Earth (as you do) and stuck it up on't interweb for all to peruse. Check the pic below of a ‘Flying Car’ spotted in Australia, Perth. According to our Oz photo interpretation bureau (Clinton Bird), the vehicle in question is at an altitude of three or four metres and doing about 80 knots.
